Jim Tetlow Drone-based ambient music that seeks to leave in the wealth of details rather than smooth them over; organic washes of strings ebbing and flowing like the oceans which inspire it. Delicate yet powerful, not to mention beautiful. Favorite track: An Ancient Journey Extended.

about

In January of 2019, I was invited to participate in the inaugural 'Sounds + Visions' event at Haarlem Artspace in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, providing a musical response to the exhibited drawings and film work of British artist, Peter Matthews. 'With/In Oceans' is a live recording of that performance; three long-form, almost entirely improvised pieces using acoustic and electronic sources.

The titles of the pieces are borrowed from the three films that were projected simultaneously with each piece, although, the performance itself was equally informed by Matthews' drawings, which were hung on the surrounding walls of the space: broad sheets of sea-worn paper inscribed with enigmatic loops and lines, and syntactically fluid, wave-form records of the artist's sensations and observations while drifting in the ocean.

Cover image is a detail from Peter Matthews, '2 Hours in and with the Atlantic Ocean (England), 2017.

Thanks to Peter Matthews, Geoff Diego Litherland, Olivia Punnett, Gavin Repton, and the audience at Haarlem Artspace who were so warm and hospitable on that snowy night.
